Soybean Seeds Pretreatment Process

Soybean Seed→Cleaning and Stone Removing →Crushing →Softening →Flaking →Drying →To Extraction Workshop

Cleaning

Cleaning process is very important for pretreatment process. The bigger materials maybe will wedge into the equipments to block the raw materials, this will corrupt the equipments which will shorten the using life and lower down the working efficiency. Therefore, it needs cleaning screen to remove the big impurities, using magnetic separator to remove the metal things. The cleaning sieve always use vibrating sieve, it means the screen is taking advance and return movement in the working time, the cleaning efficiency is very high and works reliable.

Specific-gravity Stoner

This machine is used to separate the side by side stone from the soybean seed, according to the different specific gravity and suspending speed, the side by side stone will fall at bottom, and under the function of stoning plates, the stone moves to the stone discharging port. While the soybean seed at the upper floor will flow to the soybean discharging port under the self-supporting effect. The machine has the features of strict structure, good dustpoof effect, and high stoning ratio, etc.

Crushing

The purpose of crushing is to crush the soybean seed into small granules, which will be easy for flaking process to destroy the oils and fats cells, which can provides conditions for high oil pressing efficiency. Assembled with alloy tooth roller which using life is one time longer than common rollers. The crusher can crush the soybean averagely, also it has automatic roller control system, also it has good sealing effect.

Softening

The function of conditioning is to adjust the moisture and temperature of the soybeans so that they have a certain degree of plasticity, making it easier to separate the oil from the embryos during pressing. Soybean rolling is the process of using the mechanical function to roll the soybean from the granular to the flake.

Flaking

The purpose of flaking is to destroy the soybean's cell tissue which can make the oil separated smoothly. Also the flaking machine assembles alloy roller which using life is 1 time longer than common roller and also assembles automatic hydraulic roller tightening system to ensure the average thickness of flakes(≤0.3mm), the whole machine is sealed well.

Dryer

The drying process is mainly realized through plate dryer, the purpose is to control the soybean flake’s moisture content between 5%-7%, which will be suitable for the following solvent extraction section, to reach the effect of much more oil. The whole machine has advantages of reliable working, low energy consumption and good sealing effect.

Soybean Oil Pressing Process

In soybean oil production, the choice between mechanical pressing and solvent extraction depends on factors like plant capacity, oil yield requirements, production costs, and intended uses of the by-products (oilcake/meal). The mechanical pressing method is usually a good choice for a soybean oil mill plant with a capacity under 100 TPD. For small to medium production scales, when residual oil in the cake is acceptable or desirable, and when producing high-value, premium, or organic oils, we recommend using the mechanical soybean pressing method. The oil press machines have a capacity ranging from 10 to 300 tons per day (TPD), and they can extract about 70% of the oil in the soybean.

Soybean oil solvent extraction process

The soybean oil solvent extraction plant is part of the soybean oil processing plant, which is designed to extract oil directly from pressed soybean oil. After the soybean oil solvent extraction plant, the residual oil content in the soybean oil is less than 1%. The pretreated soybean flakes are sent to the soybean solvent extraction plant. The plant uses a type of solvent (normal hexane) to absorb the soybean oil, and then machines separate the solvent from the crude soybean oil. The solvent is used for recycling, and the crude soybean oil is refined in an oil refinery plant.

Pressed cake→Solvent extraction system→D.T.D.C system→Condenser system→Recovery system→Crude soybean oil

Soybean oil solvent extraction system

Soybean oil solvent extraction system

using N-hexane to react with puffing soybean materials, then you can get two parts: the mixture of solvents and oil called miscella oil and the mixture of solvents and meal called wet meal.

D.T.D.C system

D.T.D.C system

D.T.D.C means desolventizer, toaster, dryer and cooler, which is mainly used to separate the solvents from the wet meal, then the dried meal will be sent to meal silo for storage.

Miscella oil evaporation system

Miscella oil evaporation system

since miscella oil contains solvents, we need to separate the solvents from the crude soybean oil by first evaporation, second evaporation and stripping tower, then we can condensate the oil and pump it into a crude oil tank, and you can choose to sell the crude oil to the refinery factory or you can set up a soybean oil refinery plant by yourself.

Solvents condensing and recovery system

Solvents condensing and recovery system

Usually producing one ton crude soybean oil through the soybean oil solvent extraction method needs around 4kg solvents. Considering of cost-effectives and environmental protection, we add this system to recycle the solvents by condensing it and collecting it for reuse.

Crude Soybean Oil Refining Process

We can offer turnkey soybean oil refinery plant solutions from plant layout design, machinery manufacturing, onsite debugging and installing. The production capacity ranges from 5 ton/d up to 1000 ton/day

Degumming Process

Degumming Process

Some impurity, such as Phospholipid, gum, and protein, can be dissolved into oil when there is no water, but once there is water in oil, these impurities can be dissolved into water. So, in degumming section of soybean oil refinery plant, we use the hot water to wash crude oil for two-three times to remove these impurities.

Neutralizing/Neutralization Process

Neutralizing/Neutralization Proces

The crude oil is fed into the neutralizer and mixed with small amounts of degumming agent such as phosphoric acid to help remove gums.Free fatty acids are removed from the oil by adding caustic soda and heating it at 60˚ then stirring the mixture. Heating forms soap base, which is then precipitated and collected, and washed with water to remove alkaline particles.

Decolorizing Process

Decolorizing Process

The neutralized oil requires bleaching machine to get rid of colors. This is done by adding the oil in a bleacher machine whereby it is heated to remove any moisture it might have and then mixed with earth bleach and activated carbon. These two properties absorb any colors after which the oil is passed through a filter to separate oil from earth bleach and carbon. The result is golden light oil.

Deodorizing Process

Deodorizing Process

The golden light oil has unpleasant odors which result from materials such as aldehydes, ketones, tocopherols and phenols among other odiferous elements. Deodorizing process of soybean oil refinery plant helps remove these odors by adding the oil in the deodorizer and heating it above at very high temperature and under very high vacuum. This deodorizing process helps get rid of all odors.

Soybean oil production lines are categorized by their daily processing capacity, which dictates equipment size, automation, and output:

  • Small-scale: Processes 1 ton to 30 tons of soybeans/day. Uses basic mechanical presses, manual or semi-automated operations, and serves local markets. Ideal for rural or community-level operations.
  • Medium-scale: Handles 30–100 tons/day. Integrates semi-automated extraction (screw presses or solvent-assisted methods) and basic refining. Supplies regional markets or small food manufacturers.
  • Large-scale: Processes 100+ tons/day. Relies on fully automated solvent extraction (using hexane) for maximum yield, followed by advanced refining (degumming, neutralization, bleaching, deodorization). Produces high-quality oil for national/international markets and industrial use.

  • Mechanical pressing: Uses screw presses to physically squeeze oil from soybeans. It is simpler, uses less energy, and avoids chemical solvents. However, oil yield is lower (12–16% for small-scale; 16–18% for large-scale presses) due to residual oil in the meal. Common in small/medium lines focused on "natural" or cold-pressed oils.
  • Solvent extraction: Uses food-grade hexane to dissolve oil from soybean flakes, achieving yields of 18–20%. The solvent is then evaporated and recycled. This method is more efficient but requires complex equipment (extraction columns, solvent recovery systems) and strict safety measures (to prevent explosions). Dominant in large-scale lines where high yield justifies higher setup costs.

Cleaning: Removes impurities (stones, metal, dust) via destoners, magnetic separators, and vibratory screens to protect equipment and ensure oil quality.
Conditioning: Adjusts soybean moisture (8–10%) and temperature (60–80°C) to soften seeds, improving oil release during extraction.
Extraction: Either mechanical pressing (screw/expeller presses) or solvent extraction (for higher yield) to separate oil from solids.
Crude oil refining: Removes impurities via degumming (phospholipids), neutralization (free fatty acids), bleaching (pigments), and deodorization (volatile compounds) to produce edible-grade oil.
Oil storage: Stores refined oil in stainless steel tanks with temperature control and nitrogen blanketing to prevent oxidation.
Packaging: Fills oil into bottles, drums, or bulk containers using automated fillers, with labeling for compliance and consumer information.

Energy use varies by scale and extraction method:

  • Small-scale (mechanical pressing): 10–20 kWh per ton of soybeans, plus 50–100 kg of fuel (for heating during conditioning).
  • Large-scale (solvent extraction): 50–80 kWh per ton, with additional energy for solvent recovery (boilers for steam) and refining (vacuum systems for deodorization).
  • Renewable energy integration: Some modern lines use solar panels for electricity or biomass boilers (using soybean hulls as fuel) to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Setup time depends on scale and complexity:

  • Small-scale: 1–3 months. Involves installing prefabricated equipment (press, cleaner, filter) and basic infrastructure (electricity, water).
  • Medium-scale: 3–6 months. Includes semi-automated extraction, refining units, and permits for handling larger volumes.
  • Large-scale: 12–24 months. Requires custom engineering, construction of processing facilities, solvent storage systems, and regulatory approvals for industrial operations.

Nutritional quality (preserving unsaturated fats, vitamin E, and avoiding trans fats) is maintained through:

  • Controlled extraction temperatures: Cold-pressed lines limit heat to <49°C to retain nutrients; solvent extraction uses low-temperature evaporation to avoid lipid oxidation.
  • Mild refining: Large-scale lines use gentle bleaching (food-grade clay) and deodorization (low-pressure, short-time heating) to minimize nutrient loss.
  • Avoiding hydrogenation: Modern lines produce liquid oil without hydrogenation (which creates trans fats), using winterization (cooling to remove solids) for stability.

Small-scale (mechanical): $5,000–$50,000, depending on capacity and automation.
Medium-scale (semi-automated with basic refining): $50,000–$500,000.
Large-scale (solvent extraction + full refining): $1 million–$10 million+.
